History
Kappa Chapter was organized on May 2, 1942 in the Mirror Room of Seattle’s Hotel Gowman. Edna Sterling, one of the founders of Alpha Sigma State, founded Kappa Chapter along with seventeen other women educators. Rachel Royston (Knutson) served as the first Kappa President until 1944 when she was selected to be State President. Four other Kappa members have served as State President and several have held positions with DKG International.
In the late 1990s, Kappa’s members all lived in south King County and began meeting there. Current membership is comprised of women educators, both active and retired, who teach or live around Kent.
Throughout it’s history, Kappa members have been involved in support of Delta Kappa Gamma projects, supporting education locally and around the world. For over 50 years, Kappa Chapter has held fundraising events to sponsor its own scholarship fund.
Today, Kappa continues to be strong with over 40 members, and growing. The annual Holiday Brunch and Auction helps Kappa give support to DKG International projects, support local organizations which focus on students and education, and give grants to teachers completing their state certification.
